On Monday the 27th March the Wild Minds went on a trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum. We went there to learn about Manaakitanga and being a great host.
We were divided into 2 groups. One group completed a self guided tour of the museum while the other did the group lesson. We learnt that the marae is not the wharenui, (the building) but the meeting place in front of it. Before entering the wharenui the women will sing the karanga which is the welcoming song to invite us in. It is then tradition to take off our shoes and enter the wharenui and sit in front of the tangata whenua (hosts).
We then learnt about the importance of food and how it is used to bring groups together. After the waiata is performed the two chiefs will do the hongi (the breath of life) where they touch foreheads and noses.
We learnt various maori games like Pukana which is where you make your eyes big and pass it on. We also learnt about the song Ki Mai Maori which is a chant with actions to help us remember the maori vowels.
