Auckland Museum Wild Minds Trip

On Monday the 27th March the Wild Minds went on a trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum. We went there to learn about Manaakitanga and being a great host.

We were divided into 2 groups. One group completed a self guided tour of the museum while the other did the group lesson. We learnt that the marae is not the wharenui, (the building) but the meeting place in front of it. Before entering the wharenui the women will sing the karanga which is the welcoming song to invite us in. It is then tradition to take off our shoes and enter the wharenui and sit in front of the tangata whenua (hosts).

We then learnt about the importance of food and how it is used to bring groups together. After the waiata is performed the two chiefs will do the hongi (the breath of life) where they touch foreheads and noses.

We learnt various maori games like Pukana which is where you make your eyes big and pass it on. We also learnt about the song Ki Mai Maori which is a chant with actions to help us remember the maori vowels.

We are really looking forward to using what we have learnt from this trip to share with our community.

Welcome to the blog of room 1 and 2

We are 53 phenomenal students from room 1 and 2. Our two classes are made up of year 5 and 6 students from Upper Harbour Primary School in Auckland, New Zealand. We are a group of unique and remarkable students who want to post our learning on this miraculous blog. Our two wonderful teachers are Mrs Thompson and Mr Barry. We have amazing educators who make learning fun.

Our team name is Wild Minds - We go wild for learning as we truly have wild minds!
We work together across the curriculum to learn from and with our peers.
We support our classmates ideas and work together to share our skills and talents to make everyone strong in anything they want to learn. When sharing two classes it is easier to ask others to teach you what you want to learn.

UHPS Swimming Sports

On Wednesday the 1st of March the year 5s and 6s (and some year 4s) went to our UHPS swimming sports at Coatesville Primary School. It was really cold with the hard wind blowing but it didn’t stop us from having fun. We had an awesome time and it was memorable for all of us.

In the middle of swimming sports it started to rain so we all got soaked. FOS brought along popsicles for everyone which were really yummy. The water was freezing but we didn’t stop swimming because we had faith that we could do swimming sports in the rain and it was very entertaining! We enjoyed a mix of competitive and noncompetitive races with both races being very enjoyable.

We then wrote haiku poems about our swimming sports. Check out some of them below!
